The Science behind OZLOO Hip & Joint Support

Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II®) and Enzalox – a natural source of primary antioxidants

Patented Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II®) is a glycoprotein from chicken sternum cartilage that supports the reduction of exercise-associated pain and lameness in canines. Exercise can cause microtrauma in the tissue and joints of dogs, resulting in a cycle of inflammation and discomfort even in healthy dogs.

Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II®) & Enzalox Antioxidants to aid mobility and relieve arthritis

Undenatured type II collagen (UC-II®)

Finding an effective cure for arthritis is a major challenge for veterinarians. Over the counter pain relievers, NSAIDs/other anti-inflammatory drugs (COX-I and COX-II enzymes inhibitors), and monoclonal antibodies can have major adverse effects, including liver disease, gastritis, vomiting, and cardiovascular dysfunction.

Results of studies suggest that daily treatment of arthritic dogs with UC-II reduces signs and symptoms associated with arthritis, such as pain and lameness after physical exertion. The greatest physical improvements were noted after a treatment period of 90 days, suggesting that prolonged treatment with the supplement may lead to enhanced results.

UC-II® improves the mobility of dogs affected by Osteo Arthritis on a magnitude similar to robenacoxib. These results open new therapeutic windows in the treatment of OA in dogs and, in particular, if confirmed by future studies, UC-II can be a valid support in the multimodal approach to Osteo Arthritis treatment. Considering its innovative mechanism of action, it could be used in association or as an alternative to NSAIDs administration depending on the clinical severity of the OA. (Gupta, et al 2012)

Therapeutic Efficacy and Safety of Undenatured Type II Collagen Singly or in Combination with Glucosamine and Chondroitin in Arthritic Dogs

Abstract:
This investigation was undertaken to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of undenatured type II collagen (UC-II) alone or in combination with glucosamine HCl and chondroitin sulfate in arthritic dogs i.e similar to OZLOO Joint & Mobility.

Twenty dogs divided into four groups (n = 5) were daily treated orally for 120 days: group I, placebo; group II, 10 mg UC-II; group III, 2,000 mg glucosamine + 1,600 mg chondroitin; group IV, UC-II (10 mg) + glucosamine (2,000 mg) + chondroitin (1,600 mg), followed by a 30-day withdrawal period.

Conclusion:
The overall activity of the dogs in the UC-II supplemented with glucosamine and chondroitin group (group IV) was significantly better than the glucosamine + chondroitin-supplemented group (group III). Glucosamine and chondroitin alleviated some pain, but in combination with UC-II (group IV) provided significant reductions in overall pain (57%), pain upon limb manipulation (53%), and exercise-associated lameness (53%). Following withdrawal of supplements, all dogs (groups II to IV) experienced a relapse of pain.

Primary Antioxidants – SOD

SOD (Superoxide dismutase) can be found in several ingredients:

algae, pea seeds and leaves, spinach leaves, rice leaves, lentils, maize kernels, tomato leaves, watermelon, soybean, ginko, lemon → A very high concentration in SOD is present in a specific variety of melon (Melofeed).

It’s a freeze-dried melon juice naturally rich in Superoxide Dismutase (SOD ) and catalase (both primary enzymes of the antioxidant defence system)

It is a unique source of natural SOD for from a proprietary variety of melon (Cucumis melo L.), non GMO, containing guaranteed high level of SOD.

SOD cannot be absorbed in the small intestine as the molecule is too large. Instead of this, SOD stimulates the endogenous production of antioxidant enzymes via receptors in the intestinal wall. Supplementation of SOD from this specific variety of Melon has been demonstrated to be able to induce expression of endogenous antioxidants in several organs (adipose tissue, heart, liver, reproductive tract: +25-30% above control) of different animal species.

Context: Oxidative stress is caused by a disequilibrium between oxidants and antioxidants and may occur at the level of cells, tissues, or even the whole organism. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), acts as protective mechanisms during elevated oxidative stress. Intense physical activity increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). It could lead to oxidative stress if not counteracted by an adequate TAS.

Objective: Investigate the capacity of MELOFEED to help reinforce the total antioxidant status of healthy sport dogs during and after intense physical activity.

Result: Repeated physical activities significantly reduced the TAS of Control versus Melofeed-supplemented dogs i.e as contained in OZLOO Joint & Mobility

Melofeed supplemented dogs maintained their TAS value over the whole trial period, indicating a better resistance against oxidative stress

MELOFEED provides a natural, highly concentrated source of SOD: it helps reinforce the antioxidant defence system of dogs in challenging conditions such as intense physical activity.
